  • Graphics, Backgrounds, and Colors
  • Use script
  • Content, file size
  • Browser and platform Compatibility
Layout: Use Tables, frames, CSS or Template

Tables are widely used for page layout, it's easy to use and most flexible. Frames are often used to design navigate menus, but not all platform support it. A drawback of frames is that search engine robot cannot read and follow links in frames very well. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is very popular today for adding style (e.g. fonts, colors, spacing) to Web documents. Some old version browsers may not support CSS.

Coding every new page in your Web site from scratch may be a problem if you site has more pages. Template can let you make your web pages very quickly and easily.

You can create your own template, starting with make the home page, then make other pages by just replace the home page content with "product" content.

there are also many ready-made templates webmasters can use free or pay for it for those who lack of time or skills or prefer professional designs.

Graphics, Backgrounds, and Colors

Text should be clear to read. Background does not interrupt the text. Link colors coordinate with page colors. Background, colors should be consistent though out your web site, to let visitor know they are still in your site when they go from page to page. Place logo on every page and make the logo a link to the home page. Navigation button should be in the same place of each page and easy to find.

Use Script

To add feature to your website, you may write script. Make sure which language is supported by web host. Some web host offer installed script like Message board, shopping cart etc. Web masters can use free or pay for it.

Content, file size

You can add pictures, flashes etc to your page as you like, but keep in mind: content is the most important thing which attract people to your pages, to get visitors come back again and again to your website. And often the file size of your page should not be more than 50K; because large file need more time to load and visitors are not so patient.

Browser and platform Compatibility

People who visit your site may use different computers. So when design your web pages, following issues should be considered:
  • Screen solution: screen solution may be 800x600, 1024x768, or 640x480 (few people use). If you design your site with fixed widths, you'd better design your page no more than 800x600; otherwise your visitors need to scroll their screens horizontally to see the entire page. If you only use relative widths like 100%, 75%, you shall make sure your pictures used by the web page exceed the widths of the columns.
  • Color palettes: Color palettes may be 32bit, 16bit, or 256colors. Color code results in different colors on different systems. What looks beautiful in your system may looks ugly in other system, so you'd better switch to other color settings and platform to check it.
  • Browsers: Browsers may be IExplore, Netscape, Mozilla and Opera etc. If you design your web site using frame, Java, JavaScript, cascading style sheets, some browser may don't support it. Tips is not entirely depended on them and use something like "if noframe" etc.
To make sure the browser and platform compatibility of your website, you may install different vision of IExplore, Netscape, Mozilla and Opera on your computers, or use following webmaster tools to check them on one computer.
